Dear [name of your MP]

Save The Asian Elephants – new law to protect abused elephants and tourists.

I am writing as your constituent to inform you of the appalling abuse and torture of Asian elephants in tourism, a large amount of it advertised and sold in the UK, and the grave dangers to humans.

Baby elephants are snatched from the wild, their mothers killed who try to protect them, and then the baby is isolated, starved, beaten and stabbed to “break its spirits” for easy commercial exploitation. Many die in the process. Moreover elephants provoked by such abuse regularly attack, maim and kill tourists.

When held in close confinement they are also highly effective transmitters to humans of deadly TB, then passed on to other humans. WHO emphasises TB to be a pandemic, amongst the top ten killers in the world and “the world’s top infectious killer and a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance”. India, home to by far the most Asian elephants held captive, each year generates the most new cases of TB in the world. Reckless tourism holding Asian elephants in intensive confinement and filthy, unnatural conditions for commercial exploitation risks a resurgence of TB at a time when the world’s population is already at grave risk from coronavirus.

Please confirm that you will support Save The Asian Elephants (you can see their tragic short video at www.stae.org) in their campaign for a new UK law to ban the advertising, promotion and sale of unethical Asian elephant related venues and practices. Only genuine, ethical sanctuaries should exist, observing elephants from a safe distance.

STAE’s change.org petition is now the largest for elephants in history totalling with others 17 million signatures. Independent polling by Populus shows almost 90% of Britons support STAE’s policies. But I realise your support as a legislator is essential.
I look forward to hearing from you, thank you.

Yours sincerely
