Dear Secretary of State

Animals (Low-Welfare Activities Abroad) Act

Asian elephants and other species – lions, tigers, gorillas, chimps, bears – are routinely brutalised and tortured for easy use in tourism.

Asian elephants are wondrous “megagardeners of the forests” who nourish and sustain their habitats, enhancing the survival of all species including Man. The forests are the lungs of the Earth that store carbon and combat climate change.

Save The Asian Elephants has brought to your Department’s attention that some 1,200 UK travel companies are presently advertising 300 of the most violent Asian elephant-related places where such abuse abounds. Baby elephants are snatched from the wild, their protective mothers killed, the babies isolated, starved, beaten, stabbed and ripped with hooks to “break the spirits” for easy exploitation – riding, selfies and tricks.

Many exploited species are nearing extinction, so much driven by brutal UK tourism advertising

Numerous promises of change by the industry have proved empty. Now Parliament backed by the nation has passed new law, urgently needed to steer the market to ethical practices.

Please confirm you will ensure no delay in working with STAE and the animal welfare sector to build and implement strong activity regulations so the Act can have rapid effect.

Yours sincerely
