Dear Prime Minister
STAE is grateful for your government’s support in ensuring the Animals (Low-Welfare Activities Abroad) Bill has now passed into law. If rigorously implemented and enforced, it will prove crucial in protecting numerous iconic but highly endangered species from extinction, harmed and killed for tourism fun, so much driven by the UK market.
Over 1,200 UK companies advertise 300 such places where Asian elephants suffer horrifically. Baby elephants are brutally captured, isolated, starved, stabbed with hooks and broken for riding, selfies, tricks, reinforced by violence for life. Numbers have crashed, so much driven by the UK’s market. Endangered primates, big cats, bears, dolphins, equines, avians and other marine life all suffer for tourism “fun”, along with horses, donkeys, camels and many others.
Abused animals attack and kill and also pass deadly viruses to humans in close confinement. Numerous industry promises of change have proved empty. The law must be implemented without delay, steering the market to ethical practices. Please ensure Defra consults rapidly with STAE and the charity world on “activity regulations”. We will be ready to work with the Secretary of State, supplying compelling evidence of the horrors and dangers. The Act is a world first for Britain and for other nations to follow.
